About the Department

The University of Allahabad was started on 23 September 1887 with the conversion of Muir Central College into the science block of the University. Department of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology was established to constitute the Faculty of Science. The existing Physics laboratories of the Department of Physics were extended, and new laboratories were constructed during 1922-23. On the advice of Einstein and Eddington, Prof. Meghnad Saha was appointed as the first Professor and Head of the Department in 1923.Prof. Saha’s love and labor bore fruit, and the Department became famous world wide for its pioneering research work on Spectroscopic Analysis of Atomic Spectra, Ionospheric Studies, Acoustic & Ultrasonic Measurements, and X-ray Spectroscopy. The department is gradually becoming an important hub for undertaking many new interdisciplinary and challenging areas of study, such as Applied Science, Nano Science, Molecular Materials and Devices, Simulation Studies, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Accelerator Physics, etc.

About the City and University of Allahabad

One of the oldest cities of India, Allahabad is also known as ‘Thirthraj Prayag’. The confluence of the three sacred rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati (Triveni Sangam) marks the religious importance of the city. The highlight of the religious significance of the place is apparent even today; every year a month long bathing festival, “Magh Mela” is held when Jupiter is in Aries or Taurus and Sun and Moon are in Capricorn during the Hindu month of Magha (January-February). Every twelfth year the occasion is marked by “Kumbh Mela”, which is so far the largest congregation anywhere in the world. The University of Allahabad is one of the four oldest universities of the country. Besides the university, the city can boast of several prestigious institutions and places of interest, viz., Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Harish Chandra Research Institute, Moti Lal Nehru National Institute of Technology, The National Academy of Sciences, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad Agricultural Institute, Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Social Sciences, and many others.
